LABOR, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, AND EDUCATION APPROPRIATIONS BILL MOVES THROUGH COMMITTEE

{The House Committee on Appropriations this morning marked up the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill for Federal FY 2008.

"This appropriations legislation addresses multiple issues of national importance to America's children and families," said Walsh. "The bill advances new cancer screening, tele-health, senior health and wellness, and electronic record keeping initiatives, as well as providing new resources for at-risk youth and the education of children with disabilities and special needs. It also provides millions of dollars for projects of importance to New York."

Included in the bill reported to the full House was a successful Walsh amendment to provide an additional $335 million of federal resources to states to fund the education of children with disabilities and special needs under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1977. With Walsh's increase, $12,310,831,000 will be available for school districts nationwide next year to support special education.

Also included through Walsh's work was bill language to develop a first-of-its-kind federal policy to manage the risk of food allergies and anaphylaxis in schools and to provide parents with enhanced information on these conditions via the internet.
